Prominent ear correction, also known as otoplasty or ear pinning, is a surgical procedure performed to address ears that stick out prominently from the head. This cosmetic surgery is commonly sought by individuals who feel self-conscious about the appearance of their ears or experience teasing or social discomfort due to prominent ears.
During prominent ear correction, the surgeon makes small incisions behind the ear, where they are less visible. The underlying cartilage is then reshaped and repositioned to bring the ears closer to the head. The surgeon may also remove excess cartilage or skin, if necessary. Sutures are used to hold the newly shaped ear in place and close the incisions.
After otoplasty, patients may experience some swelling, bruising, and mild discomfort around the ears. Pain medication and cold compresses can help manage these symptoms.
The head is typically wrapped in a bandage or headband-like dressing immediately after the surgery to protect and support the ears during the initial healing phase.
It’s essential to follow the surgeon’s post-operative instructions carefully, including wearing a headband or bandage for the recommended time and avoiding certain activities that could strain the ears during the recovery period.
Strenuous activities and contact sports should be avoided for several weeks to promote proper healing.
